Educational Programs

South Dakota was a lead state in reviewing the Next Generation Science Standards.

As a member of the committee that reviewed the NGSS and the state Science Standards Revision Committee I have an in-depth understanding of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the new South Dakota Science Standards.

Understanding the SD Science Standards

The SD Science Standards have shifted from being content focused to descriptions of performance expectations. The three dimensions – Science and Engineering Practices, Crosscutting Concepts and Disciplinary Core Ideas – are integrated into the performance expectations. The standards are based on scientific research, including research on the ways students learn science effectively.  The standards are designed to reflect and build on learning progressions from elementary through middle and high school.
