I have the privilege of working with Dr. Marie Steckelberg through a 21st Century Learning Communities STEM Grant. The grant requires travel to all the eligible out of school programs in the state of SD. Managing the logistics is challenging to say the least, but Marie’s meticulous planning and organizational skills make our work efficient and effective. Marie delights in sharing her knowledge of STEM instructional strategies and ensures the professional development gives educators confidence in their new curriculum and classroom management skills. The professional relationships Marie has established throughout the state of South Dakota and the nation allow her to draw on a vast network of expertise to enhance the work she does in schools, out of school programs, and beyond. Marie’s experience, knowledge, and willingness to embrace a challenge have been an inspiration to me and so many others.
Steckelberg Consulting has been an ongoing resource for our organization and for our community. Dr. Steckelberg facilitated an informative grant writing workshop for many non-profits in our region and went above and beyond after the workshop assisting groups and providing resources to those who attended. She has been instrumental in securing information as we advocate for policy to support our work with early learning legislation and quality preschool programming. Marie has served as our NASA South Dakota Space Grant Consortium professional program evaluator since 2016. By attending our monthly management team meetings and evaluating our many STEM educational programs spanning K through university, she provides solid, practical advice that we can use to improve our program effectiveness. Marie is a pleasure to work with.
Dr. Marie Steckelberg, Steckelberg Consulting LLC, has collaborated with our team to design top quality, engaging professional development opportunities for our school staff. Scientists and university faculty do not necessarily speak the language of program evaluation. Working with the South Dakota NASA Space Grant Consortium, Dr. Steckelberg has helped us develop an overall evaluation strategy and, within that framework, to implement specific data collection and survey tools that have had a positive impact on our program management and program outcomes. As a result of Dr. Steckelberg’s guidance, we find ourselves in the forefront among our peer organizations across the U.S. and well-positioned to provide our program managers at NASA with solid evaluative feedback.
Marie has been an invaluable addition to the team at SDPB. She has been able to augment our staff in a variety of ways, not only researching and writing grants but also strategizing program efforts. Marie has also been able to review other proposals and make the writing much more elegant.

I attended one of Dr. Steckelberg’s professional develop workshops early in my teaching career and was so impressed with the wealth of ideas and resources presented that were adaptable to all different grade levels and learning styles. I continue to use and share the resources from that first workshop and I have since sought out and attended many other workshops presented by Dr. Steckelberg. Perhaps one of the greatest resources gained by the professional development is the connection to Dr. Steckelberg herself, who reaches out and encourages her participants to reach out and go further with their teaching than they ever knew how. After that first workshop, it was through my connection with Dr. Steckelberg that our school received a sizable grant for our summer program, and it was through my most recent workshop that Dr. Steckelberg encouraged me to and assisted me with writing my first grant for my own classroom which we won and used to engineer our own high altitude balloon to capture images of space!
As a colleague of Dr. Steckelberg working in the Rising Star Educator Program (RSEP) and as a professional mentee of hers myself, I have witnessed Dr. Steckelberg in action making a difference in education. Her workshops’ audiences range in ability/experiences yet she differentiates her presentations to meet the needs of those in attendance. Dr. Steckelberg models her commitment to excellence through a hands-on approach for presenting STEM content and lessons for both pre-service and veteran educators. She is an inspiration and encourager for our RSEP team as we journey together to meet the mission of our Rising Star Educator Program.
I hired Marie to run our statewide program because I knew her to be someone who gets projects done with a mind for timeliness and quality. She has proven this true.
