Creating Focused, Rigorous and Engaging Learning Experiences In-Service
This 6 hour in-service provided teachers an opportunity to learn about and explore the Understanding by Design (Wiggens & McTighe) teaching framework. Focusing on a unit of their choice, the teachers were actively engaged in identifying the “big idea”, developing Essential Questions to frame the learning goals for their unit and identifying a performance task. They also were introduced to the 5E Instructional Model.

Goals of Workshop:
Practicing what I was “preaching” the following overarching understanding/big idea and essential questions guided the learning goals of the in-service:
Thinking purposefully about what students need to understand transforms content standards and other goals into focused learning targets based on “big ideas” and transfer tasks.
How can I ensure learning is focused?
How can I help facts acquire meaning for students?
How do I know students are meeting the rigor of, and depth of knowledge, of the standards?
How can I help students discover knowledge, rather than cover knowledge?
Performance Expectations Develop a unit applying elements of the UbD design and the 5E Instructional Model.
