Educators are designers. They are designers of curriculum, units, lessons and assessments. In the design process, educators must think purposefully about the learning targets of what students need to understand from a “big idea” perspective.
This highly interactive workshop provides teachers an opportunity to learn about and explore the Understanding by Design (Wiggens & McTighe) teaching framework. Focusing on a unit of their choice, the teachers are actively engaged in identifying the “big idea”, developing Essential Questions to frame the learning goals for their unit and identifying a performance task. The educators then design lessons using the highly researched and validated 5E Instructional Model.

Thinking purposefully about what students need to understand transforms content standards and other goals into focused learning targets based on “big ideas” and transfer tasks.

How do I know students are meeting the rigor of, and depth of knowledge, of the standards?
How can I help students discover knowledge, rather than cover knowledge?
Participants will leave with tools they can immediately use in their setting.
