Program Description:
This 6 hour in-service provided teachers an opportunity to learn about and explore the Understanding by Design (Wiggens & McTighe) teaching framework. Focusing on a unit of their choice, the teachers were actively engaged in identifying the “big idea”, developing Essential Questions to frame the learning goals for their unit and identifying a performance task. They also were introduced to the 5E Instructional Model.

Overarching Understanding:
Thinking purposefully about what students need to understand transforms content standards and other goals into focused learning targets based on “big ideas” and transfer tasks.

- How do I know students are meeting the rigor of, and depth of knowledge, of the standards?
- How can I help students discover knowledge, rather than cover knowledge?
